Server Moved

theposse.org is now running on my server. The page style is currently just a copy of fateofio.org with the colors changed, but I'm sure Chris will come up with a style of his own soon.

The mail servers have NOT moved. If you used theposse.org for mail, it should still operate as before. However, this is temporary. As mentioned previously, we want to move theposse.org's mail server to my server as well. I will configure your e-mail to be forwarded from there to the e-mail address of your choice. I recommend gmail, and I can set you up with a gmail account if you need one. Please IM me or post below if you need this set up.

EDIT: Oh yeah. For those who were on the front-page posting list before, please contact me once you have registered to be added to the new one.

A note regarding editing posts, since I'm sure it will be asked many times if I don't explain now...

You can't edit or delete your posts once you've posted them (unless you are an admin or moderator, in which case you can edit/delete anyone's posts). You can, however, "append" your post to add corrections or info you may have forgotten. Also, you can preview your posts before posting them to make sure you got the formatting right.

There are a number of reasons why I chose to set it up this way. Most of them are more relevant to Fate of Io than theposse.org:

  • A few times at the old fateofio.org web site, people actually edited their posts to change their meaning long after others had replied, causing confusion.

  • Allowing people to edit or delete their posts could potentially allow a hacker who hijacked someone's account to destroy important information.

  • Keeping an edit history tends to waste a lot of space because people will happily edit some of their posts many times, creating many nearly-identical copies of the post in the database. People tend to do this even more for very long posts, which just multiplies the problem. This could be solved by only storing diff's of the posts, but that would be fairly complicated to implement.

Really, though, I think the combination of append and preview are enough to cover just about every legitimate use of the edit button. It will just take a bit of time to adjust to a new style of posting.

Technically since burn is an admin he can edit his posts.

Already did last night. Look for the "post entry" button on the sidebar while viewing the front page.

Chris, for reference, if you want to edit the CSS, go to http://theposse.org/admin/files/style to upload it. (You need to be logged in as burn (or temporal) or that link will come up 404.)
